Healthy Habits To Live By

The month of September is known for many things. There’s International Country Music Day, Butterscotch Pudding day, Punctuation Day, Happy Cat Month, National Honey Month, and National Shake Month just to name a few. But did you also know that September is also officially National Childhood Obesity Month?

Childhood obesity is a serious topic. So serious that it deserves an entire month of attention in our country!

Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in 30 years. In 2012, more than one third of children and adolescents were overweight or obese. Children who are obese are more likely to have any or all of the following conditions: asthma, diabetes, gallstones, heart disease, high blood pressure, liver problems, menstrual problems, and trouble sleeping.

Here are 3 easy things you can do to stop the rise of childhood obesity…

1. Encourage healthy eating habits in your home.

First, toss out all the starchy crackers, chips and cereals. It sounds hard core, but if kids have these items available, they will be the first things they reach for every time they get hungry. So just get rid of them!

Stock your fridge instead with plenty of healthy meats and vegetables for ready to eat dinners and snacks. Eggs are a nutritious and convenient breakfast item, and lend themselves to many different flavors for picky eaters. Consider baking up chicken breasts in advance for your children to eat for a quick dinner or snack on throughout the week. Lunch meat, apples and nuts make excellent portable snacks.

2. Help your kids stay active.

We know that you’re doing everything you can to get in your 15 minutes of walking/day, why not get the family involved? Take your kids with you for a stroll around the block or in the park. Younger kids can ride their scooters or bikes alongside you. Go toss a football around outside. Anything that your family can do to get moving at least 15 minutes a day routinely will develop healthy lifetime habits.

3. Talk to your children about food and a healthy body concept.

Nowadays, it’s hard being a parent. There’s bullying, extremely thin celebrities, endless pasta at restaurants, and the list continues. Be open with your children. Talk to them about how the food choices they make affect their health. Education is key in preventing and reversing Childhood obesity.

Please reach out to me at any time and ask to talk! Together we can discuss how you can create healthy habits with your children, and I’d love to get to know you as well!

Have a great night!
